If the conditions are created for Continued 37 CHAPTER 3 even the slightest acquisition of skills within a symbolic domain and the intense concentration associated with ‘creative flow’ (Csikzentmihaly 2002), impact is intensified. Mastering new technologies or materials (however simple), fosters the ‘making strange’ which contributes to the disruptive quality needed for new understanding. For me, still in the process of developing an ethical framework for this kind of research, the fact that participating in the creative research activity of itself has the potential to offer participants positive impact (for example, contribute to their greater sense of agency or wellbeing), is significant.
An example of this is a project, in which we were involved in evaluating the impact 38 UNDERTAKING ARTS-RELATED RESEARCH of arts-based activities, particularly the use of theatre and performance, on the health and wellbeing of the 50+ population in Coventry: A project team came together consisting of representatives from the theatre, the project manager (employed to promote the project and deliver the staged intervention), Age UK (a UK based charity), city council representatives and ourselves as researchers.
The type of arts-related research that such researchers might engage with is more akin to artsinformed inquiry, also referred to by Ewing and Hughes (2008:516) as ‘expressive construction’, the focus being to communicate new understandings through creative means, yet without those creative means being considered as works of art. Whilst those new to the field of arts-related research may be interested in how the arts can enrich and extend qualitative methodologies and epistemologies (Daykin, 2008), tensions exist and issues of quality and representation remain.
